Between 25 and 27 million Americans wear contact lenses. The majority use these devices to correct vision as an alternative to glasses. Approximately 85% use soft lenses because of the superior comfort provided. Contact lenses fit over the cornea, the transparent out coat of the eye. Soft lenses are made of hydrophilic (water loving) plastics that absorb fluid. When these materials soak up water, they become supple and soft. The water content can vary from 37% to 80%. Soft lenses are used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and some degrees of astigmatism. Soft lenses may also be prescribed following cataract surgery for vision correction. This use of soft lenses is much less common since the advent of the intraocular lens implant, an artificial lens that replaces the cloudy natural lens removed during cataract surgery.
Soft lenses can be made thick or thin, depending on the patient’s needs. If they are made very thin or if they contain a large amount of water, they allow a sufficient amount of oxygen to pass through to the eye to permit long wearing periods and thus are called extended wear lenses. They can be worn for days at a time unlike daily wear lenses, which must be removed every night. Recent evidence, however, suggests that caution be exercised in their use due to an increased risk of serious corneal infection with overnight wear. Daily wear use of these soft lenses doesn’t increase the risk of infection over lenses specifically designed for daily wear.
There are two types: (1) those that darken light-colored eyes and (2) those that lighten dark-colored dyes. The Iris is the colored portion of the eye seen through the Cornea. Its color is determined by the amount of pigmentation present and is genetically programmed. People with gray, pale blue, light hazel or green eyes can alter their eye color in a cosmetically acceptable fashion with tinted soft lenses, without changing their color perception.

A contact lens is a corrective or cosmetic lens placed on the cornea of the eye atop the iris.
Contacts can come in a number of varieties, including hard and soft. The most commonly used contact lenses today, however, are of the soft variety.
Contact lenses are made of various types of polymers, usually containing some variant of silicone hydrogel. Previously, hard contact lenses were made of a polymer known as PMMA. They have since been replaced by rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses. Many contact lenses are made of hydrophilic (water-absorbing) materials, thereby allowing oxygen to reach the cornea, and make the lens more comfortable to wear.
Heavily tinted contacts are tinted to change the color of the iris, and are used for cosmetic reasons. Some standard contact lenses are slightly tinted in order to make them more visible for handling purposes.
While daily disposable lenses require no cleaning, other types require regular cleaning and disinfecting in order to retain clear vision and prevent infections. There are a number of products that can be used to perform these important tasks:
Saline solution - used for rinsing the lens after cleaning and preparing it for insertion.
Daily cleaner - used to clean lenses on a daily basis. Usually one puts a few drops of cleaner on the lens and rubs for about 20 seconds (check directions) on each side. One must be extra careful in this step if one has long fingernails.
Multipurpose solution - used for rinsing, disinfecting, cleaning and storing the lenses. Many people typically only use it for disinfection and storage, relying on other products for rinsing (e.g. saline) and cleaning (e.g. daily cleaner).
Hydrogen peroxide solution - used for disinfecting the lenses. One must ensure they rinse any lens taken out of hydrogen peroxide with another solution such as saline.
Enzymatic cleaner - used for cleaning the protein off of lenses, usually on a weekly basis. Typically, this cleaner is in tablet form. Using only the daily cleaner is not sufficient to prevent protein deposits, making the lens very uncomfortable and possibly leading to eye damage.
